Here’s this weeks CD releases. Presumably all this crap is on iTunes as well. What have we got? Crap, that’s what.
The SICK PUPPIES release their second album and are about to find out that Virgin isn’t going to spend a fraction of what was spent on the last album since new EMI owners Terra Firma are looking to get out of the new artist business.
The rest of this weeks new (ie, not catalog) titles are a major snooze. A pitiful mix of EMO, Indie, Blues and backpacker hip-hop. Hopefully the forecast will improve…
Meanwhile on the archival side, DAVID BOWIE is trying to keep his bond offerings above water by releasing more archival titles that he never wanted out. Ironically none of his fans are interested any more either – they would’ve been thrilled in 1990 when he was still clinging to relevance. Oh well, hope it helps the bottom line – which it ought to at $17.98 list price!
The ROLLING STONES are re-re-releasing the worst 5 titles in their entire catalog. No bonus tracks, the artwork is no improvement but at least they (unlike Bowie) are aware of how marginally interesting they are at this stage and so they are priced accordingly.
JUDAS PRIEST are cashing in on the Bruno film with their new live album, NEIL YOUNG has a bunch of worthy catalog titles finally getting a 20 year overdue remastering, the BEASTIE BOYS are re-releasing Ill Communication with a second disc of b-sides, etc. On vinyl too, in case you have that sort of problem. Universal jumps right in like the Vultures they are and are capitalizing on the King Of Poop’s death with the reissue of two awful late Motown Jackson’s albums, previously only available at premium prices from their Hip-O online store.
Finally, in a running tie for the two least anticipated reissues of the year are YOUNG MC’s Stone Cold Rhymin (inexplicably in a SPECIAL EDITION!!!) and JEFFERSON AIRPLANE’s lousy 60’s live album. I’m giving the award to Young MC based on the special edition status. Does it come with a bonus disc remix album where all the songs except “Bust A Move” have been removed? Because that WOULD be special.
