SDCC 2009 Screw ups - Runner Up, Mattel
By our reckoning, Mattel Comic-con exclusives were the second most in demand of the event behind DC Direct’s Green Lantern 5-figure set (which also suffered major foul ups).
To their credit, at least Mattel learned a valuable lesson from last year’s show and moved the sale of their exclusives out of their show booth and over to a separate sale booth. However, they greatly underestimated the crush of the crowds everyday that wanted to buy their merchandise. The booth and the aisles all around it were a zoo from the moment the door opened on preview night. From the start, every Mattel employee told everyone that was turned away daily the same lie…”not to worry, we have rationed out new inventory to arrive everyday of the show. So you’ll have plenty of opportunity to come back and try again.”
It was complete bullshit or they simply changed their minds on Friday and decided to sell through everything they had. By Thursday morning they had sold out of the He-Man artbook. By the end of Friday, they had completely sold out of several of the most in demand figure exclusives including Wonder Twins sets with Gleek, from the Masters of the Universe they had sold the ’09 He-Ro exclusive along with He-Man, Beast Man and Skeletor. Aside from their purchasing limit of two copies per customer of the He-Man book, they never limited the number of toy exclusives one could buy.
We know the Mattel staff couldn’t give a rip but how about some consideration for the poor bastards that could only purchase single day tickets to the con? If one could only attend the show on a Saturday or Sunday and Mattel kept telling people stock would be there but lied about it, that’s a screw job. We call the Mattel Toy Shop or Matty Shop or whatever the hell they call themselves, the second biggest f*ck ups of the 2009 Comic-con.
Hey Mattel, next year, shop limit should be 2 figures per person, per day. Weeds out the scalpers in line loading up. Second, figure out how to reprint the He-Man book. Comic Book companies do this all the time. Add new content, change the cover, add a figure as a bonus, whatever, but figure it out.
And by the way, as we write this post, we noticed MattyCollector.com still has not listed any of the Mattel SDCC exclusives (left over) on it's site as promised. In comparison, the Hasbro Toy Shop has had it's con exclusives up for sale since the Monday after the show ended.

THANKS TARGET!
Target stores are currently resetting their toy aisles for the new fall season this week. Several new action figure lines or new assortments are shipping for the change.
Today I came across the Mattel's newest wave of Justice League Unlimited six figure box sets. All marked at the bargain price of...$4.98! These sets are typically $19.99 each.
I know Target and Wal-Mart are both in a heated price competition right now but this is a little crazy. Good for the collector though until they realize the stupid mistake.

San Diego Comic-con 2009- The Costumes.
Look...if you are a gal that wants to show up at this event every year as a Princess Leia in her metal bikini from 'Return of the Jedi', it's not cool, you are screaming to the world that you have serious issues. And what's the deal with all the Pirates walking around every day? There are more pirates than Stormtroopers now roaming the con. Deadpool costumes were everywhere this year. By far, he was the number one choice of super-wannabe costumes for the geeks.

San Diego Comic-con 2009- The Crowds.
Here's some examples, photos we took during the course of the event this year.
Dan Didumdum survives Comic-con but DC is in trouble.
DC had zip for the fans this year at Comic-con. The San Diego Comic-con is where the major comic publishers make all their big announcements to get the fanboys excited about the line's future. This typically includes surprise creator deals, new character or series launches, big crossover series events, licensing news, etc.
The only thing Dan Didio preached repeatedly during the show was 'Blackest Night'. The big, hit 2009 DC event already in progress. Sure DC had editorial plans they touted during the show but it's hard to find evidence any of it will quickly save the sinking ship. 'Blackest Night' is the only hit Dano has for the foreseeable future to keep him employed so that's the tune he kept singing all weekend.
We've never seen a Comic-con where a publisher wasn't placing marketing emphasis on the future. Our Didio firing watch continues. And after this show, we're feeling pretty good about it.
Back from Comic-Con...holy shit.
For an event themed on comic books, there was barely any comic news announcements to get excited about. Over 6000 New Moon fans overran the show inside and out for the first couple of days until the panel was over. Then the film cast ran out of town as fast as they could trying to escape from 12 to 17 year old girls and their mothers. There were noticeably less costumed freaks roaming the floor looking for attention over the weekend. Perhaps the recession is making it harder for the cosplayers to buy duct tape, cardboard and paint.
Out of control TV and film marketing swallowed the Gaslamp District. Ice Cream trucks handing out free popsicles and copies of Playboy (with ID shown!) alongside NBC trucks promoting the next lame sitcoms and dramas.
More to come as we recover. Attending this show is like running a five day marathon...right now we feel like these poor bastards...

SDCC09...Oh Sideshow, how you disappoint...
On the eve of Comic-con Sideshow released a bunch of announcements and sneak peeks. No doubt we'll see more at the show.
Three count 'em three more Iron Man sculpted pieces in various scales and at various retails. I don't know how many Iron Man pieces SS has come up with to date but besides the X-Men's White Queen, it's clear SS thinks these two are the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe. Oh there's also a new Venom statue despite the fact Venom hasn't been cool since the third Spider-Man film ruined him.
Also new in the SS Marvel lineup is the Scarlet Witch's chest. May or may not be a new Adam Hughes designed Comiquette.
Then we have a new or should I say old Indiana Jones from the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull 1/6th scale figure. Likely coming sometime in 2010...only nearly two years after the fourth Indy film was in theaters. Nice timing SS! Finger on the pulse baby!
We also see more overpriced figure environments listed. Anyone buying these at full price is a class 'A' sucker. Then to round it off, we still have yet more overpriced Lord of the Rings statues and the schlepping for Hot Toys superior products.
Oh Sideshow...you're going to have to work much harder than this during Comic-con to impress anybody. Get your shit together. Look around the con at your competition...everyone else is improving while you hammer out the same old crap or overpriced lameness.

Bruno Poops Bed In Second Week - Come to ME, ISLA!!
DVD & Blu-Ray Releases for Tuesday July 21st
Some good stuff here; Watchmen of course, which was hardly the revelation anyone hoped for but not nearly the tragedy it would have been in other hands, either. An additional 20+ minutes of footage will no doubt mean a lot to those that care and pass by like the wind for those who do not. Still we'll take it, even with foreknowledge of a larger set at the holidays. Hopefully this time WB will have the download thru iTunes instead of the same incompatible internal service that the Black Freighter utilized. But we doubt it.
Coraline makes it's home video debut, which means many more will finally see it.
Global Metal explores the effect of Heavy Metal in the east. It's been done before..
Mighty Boosh, the acclaimed UK sitcom that stars wonderful people, but I find unfunny, makes it's US debut - both seasons!
The "missing" Prison Break "movie" debuts this week on DVd and Blu-Ray, although we couldn't confirm the BR disc - they are advertising it.
Robot Chicken's "Empire Strikes Back" episode come to DVD with loads of extras, including 15 additional minutes of footage, but will still feel slight to most buyers. That 15 minutes of extra footage involves more work than you do in a year, pal.
Finally, aging Ska-fans (aren't they all dead?) can relive their favorite skanking moments with the Reel Big Fish Live DVD.

NEW MUSIC FOR JULY 21st, 2009
Another snooze week, including few highlights. Among them, the full-scale release of the new Cheap Trick album "The Latest", which has been available direct from the band and Amazon for a month (although only as a high-end CDR). A collection of new recordings of old, but previously unreleased, songs, "The Latest" has long-time fans raving.
A new Fiery Furnaces release will be big with the indiekids, while marginally talented Brooke Hogan releases yet another album in her plan to take over a small corner of south Florida. The airbrushed on the side of a van cover is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Ian Hunter releases a new and already highly acclaimed album this week in advance of the Mott The Hoople reunion dates.
Kid Rock's huge album of last year is re-released with two extra tracks, which seems pretty odd considering his fan-friendly stance regarding itunes, etc.
The vultures circle the King of Poop's grave a bit more with the re-release of a remix album no one wanted in the first place, and Nick Lowe has a new boxed set of his last three albums that will remind us how much we love "Pure Pop For Now People" and how concerned we are that the long-promised "Labour Of Lust" reissue is still needed.
We hear this new Jordin Sparks album is a career breakthru, and that the Sugar Ray reunion album is not.
We aren't sure who asked for new albums from Stryper and Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs as both of their last albums were underwhelming, even considering the limited appeal of both projects. Both are more relevant than Motley Crue's re-released late 90's live album, which adds nothing and is seemingly only being made available for the one guy who doesn't live near a pawn shop or used record store where he could fish out multiple copies from the .99 cent bin.
Finally, "We The Kings" release a new EP, which presumably means they have written another song as good as Juliet or S-Curve wouldn't bother. Looking forward to it.

MCA of Beastie Boys Bout With Cancer; Tour, Album Pushed Back
Beastie Boys have canceled all upcoming concert appearances to allow time for Yauch's surgery and recovery. The release of the band's forthcoming album Hot Sauce Committee Part 1 will also be pushed back.
Paraphrasing from a video statement on Beastieboys.com [below], Yauch said, "I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we'll release the record and play some shows. It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because i was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later."

Toy investment tips from the Geeks
But by far the best investment in the aisles are several Indiana Jones Lego playsets on clearance. These include most of the 2008 sets. Just about every major discontinued Lego set escalates in value eventually on the secondary market. Especially the ones tied to licenses. Go look up any older Star Wars Lego set on eBay.
Example: saw this $80 IJ4 Akator playset for $55 the other day. These kinds of sets are not likely to make it to the next round of clearance markdowns...buy 'em when you see 'em.
Hey SciFi Channel...or whatever the hell you call yourself
The Dan DiDio Countdown
You have to now believe the job of man in charge of all of DC editorial and the overall stewardship of the comic line is running outta time. The evidence has been on retail comic racks weekly for years now (since the failure that was ‘Countdown’ was conceived if you ask the Bitter Geeks) but for real proof all one has to do is review the latest DC sales numbers by title compiled over the past year. As compiled from available resources so very well right here:
The only reason why Dan still has his job right now is because of Geoff Johns “Blackest Night Saga” and Grant Morrison’s “All-Star Batman”. As the numbers show, all the reinvestment in the Superman titles has failed with no end in sight to the current failed storyline and plans. He’s pissed away the JLA and Titans value and both books sales spiral downward in freefall every month. He’s stopped and restarted Flash titles three times in as many years. ‘Final Crisis’ was a both a critical and financial bomb…and yet he’s still publishing books with Final Crisis in the titles that clearly no one is interested in. Not to mention he’s allowed a key mini-series (Legion of Three Worlds) in the FC saga and 2009 DC publishing plans be so late, the last issue has yet to see the light of day. 'Final Crisis' ended (late) back in January. On top of it all, he’s removed the big three iconic (and bankable) heroes from 2009 key publishing plans. And on and on. It’s an absolute struggle for even a handful of DC titles to get close to the 100K publishing mark.
The numbers just don’t lie. Dan’s fucked up the DCU and worn out his welcome. With these kinds of losses in just about any other business, the guy at the top of heap would be out on his ass. Here we are in the middle of summer when comic sales should be at their peak for the year and outside of ‘Blackest Night’, the majority of the DCU is in freefall. There is zero chance there will be a turnaround in the fall…retailers annually cut orders for the shelves once school starts up again.
While we assume DD will survive Comic-Con and continue to spew his bullshit online and deny there are any issues, we also predict Dano will be out by early 2010 at the very latest.
Countdown starts….now.

NEW DVD RELEASES July 14th, 2009
Wow, not much this week. Must be the fallout of the drought of good films and the exhausting of the catalog film libraries.
Two versions of Haunting In Connecticut? Not counting the Blu-ray? Oy.
Still, nerds will be thrilled that the GI Joe cartoon is back in print, but conflicted about holding out for the full box set coming from Shout! later in the year.
If this is all we have to look forward to, it’s no wonder the DVD business is in the crapper.

NEW MUSIC FOR JULY 14th, 2009
Here’s this weeks CD releases. Presumably all this crap is on iTunes as well. What have we got? Crap, that’s what.
The SICK PUPPIES release their second album and are about to find out that Virgin isn’t going to spend a fraction of what was spent on the last album since new EMI owners Terra Firma are looking to get out of the new artist business.
The rest of this weeks new (ie, not catalog) titles are a major snooze. A pitiful mix of EMO, Indie, Blues and backpacker hip-hop. Hopefully the forecast will improve…
Meanwhile on the archival side, DAVID BOWIE is trying to keep his bond offerings above water by releasing more archival titles that he never wanted out. Ironically none of his fans are interested any more either – they would’ve been thrilled in 1990 when he was still clinging to relevance. Oh well, hope it helps the bottom line – which it ought to at $17.98 list price!
The ROLLING STONES are re-re-releasing the worst 5 titles in their entire catalog. No bonus tracks, the artwork is no improvement but at least they (unlike Bowie) are aware of how marginally interesting they are at this stage and so they are priced accordingly.
JUDAS PRIEST are cashing in on the Bruno film with their new live album, NEIL YOUNG has a bunch of worthy catalog titles finally getting a 20 year overdue remastering, the BEASTIE BOYS are re-releasing Ill Communication with a second disc of b-sides, etc. On vinyl too, in case you have that sort of problem. Universal jumps right in like the Vultures they are and are capitalizing on the King Of Poop’s death with the reissue of two awful late Motown Jackson’s albums, previously only available at premium prices from their Hip-O online store.
Finally, in a running tie for the two least anticipated reissues of the year are YOUNG MC’s Stone Cold Rhymin (inexplicably in a SPECIAL EDITION!!!) and JEFFERSON AIRPLANE’s lousy 60’s live album. I’m giving the award to Young MC based on the special edition status. Does it come with a bonus disc remix album where all the songs except “Bust A Move” have been removed? Because that WOULD be special.

AND THE TEARS KEEP COMING...
PLEASE DEFINE “HERE”
More likely this is wishful thinking on the part of Diamond who were supposed to have these as a co-exclusive with TRU, until a recent Hasbro “interview/PR exercise in saying nothing in as many words possible while still trying to maintain an air of caring about the suckers, oops, I mean FANS who are baffled by our insistence on destroying a once mighty brand” revealed that they were searching for another retail partner.

San Diego Comic Con 2009 Announcements & Rumors
Maybe it's just us but it sure looks like a lot more TV and Film promotion take over this event every year. Case in point, here is a look at this year's street banners already going up around town for the con. The banners this year promote the upcoming James Cameron Avatar film.
