God Michael Bay is a retard

Saw the new Transformers film last night at a screening. I loved the first film. ILM delivers another brilliant production of 50ft robots pounding the crap out of each other. Beyond that, this sequel is a fucking train wreck that never had to be this way. But what Michael Bay giveth, he taketh away. This hack deserves every negative comment you've ever read about him or his lack of filmmaking skills.

What I learned about Michael Bay while watching TF2:

He loves, loves, LOVES jokes about the crotch, the testicals or a man's ass. And too much is never enough in this film. Yes, robots have BALLS! Big swinging, clanking balls. Let's all look up and snicker kids!

Any female in a background crowd shot or any extras casting must be hot as hell and no older than 23. No doubt each one hand picked by Bay himself in his trailer. Good to be the king on set.

Worrying about racial stereotypes in his films is for pansies. Wait until you see the Autobot twins Mupflap and Skids...both apparently straight outta Compton, Yo!

Apparently no one reminded him that this film sells a shit load of toys to very young kids. Screw that..."More sexual innuendo, foul language and dick jokes! I don't think we have enough yet!".

He loves the U.S. military. I doubt any footage shot of a soldier, plane or tank is on the cutting room floor.

He's a total douche.

Bustin' makes me feel good!

The new Ghostbusters video game is a blast. Best movie sequel that wasn't actually a movie. The game won't break new ground in technology or take the place of your beloved Halos or Wii workouts. It's just F-U-N. Simple as that.

Just about everyone from the original cast in BOTH Ghostbuster films lend voice to their characters. The whole bustin' crew is here of course, Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis and Hudson but so is Annie Potts as Jeanine, William Atherton as Walter Peck and my God even Max Von Sydow as Vigo! ("HE IS WIGO!") The game also stars familiar talent such as Alyssa Milano and Brian Doyle Murray to name a few. The acting crew is amped up (especially Aykroyd) and you can tell they are having fun. The banter between the main characters back and forth or while roaming the halls paired up with one of the 'busters is great to listen to. Peter Venkman insulted me! Awesome! The character models in both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are stunning especially considering each likeness had to be crafted from photos and film by the game artists and not a 3D scan of the actors as it is typically done these days.
The player gets to tag along on the crew's latest adventure as a new recruit, an experience I'm sure many dreamed of as kids growing up on this franchise. The storyline is no better or worse than either film actually but the overall experience of the game is like welcoming old pals into your home to hang out for awhile...and capture lots and lots of Ghosts, Spooks, Specters, demons or other paranormal abnormalities.
Here's hoping this game generates enough buzz and interest in all parties to spur on the long rumored film sequel.

A look at the new Wonder Woman Cover Girls of the DCU Statue

Received my first Cover Girls of the DC Universe statue this week. This is a new line of 10" Superheroine babes designed by famous babe illustrator, Adam Hughes. Here's a look at her.

I have to say, this piece looks better in person than I thought it would based on the early images from DC Direct. The sculpt of the face and body is very faithful to Adam's artwork. The paint deco is also very impressive. The DC Direct sculptures can be hit and miss in paint application but this case, I found the deco very tight especially around the face and the edges of the costume.

If you like Adam's art, this pickup is a no brainer. Even if you aren't this piece is a solid investment. Most of the Women of the DCU busts Adam also designed over the years go for some big bucks on the secondary market. There are already five pieces offered by DC in this line, by the time the collection builds, the early pieces typically escalate in value.

This Wonder Woman is limited to 5000 pieces, which is a decent production run for any collector statue but you can still expect it to dry up over the summer at retail. Average retail currently is about $90. The next piece in the line is Zatanna, due in Aug/Sept followed by Catwoman and Black Canary in the fourth quarter, then Power Girl early in 2010. Would imagine we'll likely see a couple more for 2010 introduced at the San Diego Comicon in July.

When will Mattel wise up with the DCU?

Has there ever been such a great line of figures so horribly mis-handled by it's brand managers in the history of toys? The six inch DC Universe Classics line by Mattel is absolutely on par with the best of the old Marvel Legends figure line when Toy Biz was calling the shots for the brand. You want 'em, I want 'em, comic fans of all ages love 'em. So why do the powers that be at Mattel continue to screw this line up so badly?

Mattel can't continue to claim overseas production problems are to blame for poor instocks or bad assortment circulation. This line is at least two years old now, if you blame manufacturing at this point, it's total bullshit. Based on how we continue to move backwards with really odd random case assortments of older waves to date, and the god-awful choices within (Gay Blue Aquaman! Keep putting him out, collectors love him!), you have to wonder why the same people at Mattel get to handle this brand. It's like someone at the company is trying hard to tank this entire line.

Retailers only have so much patience...if a company can't maintain in-stocks, any large scale retailer will look at removing the sku from the shelves until the company can demonstrate they can produce a regular flow of product. Target does this all the time with problem items. Mattel can't maintain in-stocks with the new DCU waves so they are sending out older stock to keep their shelf space until the new figures are ready to ship in a more controlled fashion. But the catch-22 here is that most collectors don't want all these older figures they already chased down months ago. And if collectors don't want the current assortment, for god's sake Mattel, at least ship mainstream iconic heroes and villains so at least kids and parents want 'em. No Gay Aquaman, no Booster Gold, no Dr Impossible, just Supes, Bats, Flash, etc. How hard is that to figure out, really?

So, we are all watching current DCU inventory rot on the pegs. Sales will slow to a point where the retailer questions the viability of the line, or simply tires of Mattel's antics and just cuts the line out entirely and moves on. This summer is make or break for Mattel and DCU with all the big retailers...if the brand managers don't get their shit together fast, we can kiss this line good-bye in 2010.

3A Toys Ashley Wood Boiler Zombie Box Mock Up

First in a line of new 1:6 figures from Ashley Wood's fertile imagination, this is the Boiler Zombie from the "Adventure Cartel". These will be lower priced figures (current rumor is $80 shipped from HK, not bad) sort of Ash's take on the Adventure Team. They go on sale next week (the 26th (Melbourne Aus), I think, but for those in the USA, it's actually the 25th). Bambaboss DIY figure is sold the day before. Love how these are contemporary but retro. Awesome! Hate how Ash has released about 15 toys in less time than it has taken me to finish one custom figure. Rats!

OMIGAWD OMIGAWD.. false alarm

The cover is real, but before you get your hopes up, Olivia is not appearing naked. Looks like a pictorial, but in a swimsuit and probably with an article where she talks about what a nerd she is and how much she knows about gadgets and stuff and talks about things I don't understand like blogs and phones and how you should keep milk in the fridge or it'll smell bad sooner.

New Rockin' Jelly Bean Vinyl Figure - the Mad Cedric!

Amazing Japanese artist Rockin' Jelly Bean has added a new vinyl figure to his online shop, Erostika. RJB has just unveiled the first in a new line of Marvel Female Statues in his own unique style. Despite this recent flurry of 3-D work and an ongoing interest in Toy Culture (he was one of the founders of Amazing Characters Magazine in the mid 90's, which covered US toys in Japanese), he has rarely been invloved in the creation of toys. Transformers Complete 1st Season DVD Review

Not going to bore fellow fanboys with a review of the animated series itself on this first in a series of new DVD releases from Shout! Factory and Hasbro. If you are interested in this '80s cartoon series you already think it's great or it takes you back or you bought it for your kid because, yes you are now that old. Let's talk about the bonus features or lack thereof.

Disk Three has one nineteen minute feature and a few short extras. Three commercials and one of the old animated PSAs (Public Service Announcements). Oh, yeah, and one printable script of an episode.

The main feature is titled Triple Changer: From Toy to Comic to Screen. A talking head retrospective of how the TF toy line came to be and how the comic and animated show were created to help sell the line in the U.S. The story is interesting but the interviews are lop-sided. Two original producers of the animated series and the original writer of the comic are here but all the Hasbro interviews are with current employees. All too young to have been there 25 years ago.


The most interesting interview in the piece is with former Marvel Comics writer/editor Bob Budiansky. This guy almost single handedly created each of the names and back stories for each of the characters. He should be one of the richest creators around as the guy who gave name and personality to the show, the books and every G1 TF toy. Here Bob shows off his original, hand written list of TF names he jotted down and then referenced every time Hasbro needed to name yet another new toy robot. What's a name like Megatron worth you think?

And here is a look at the original treatment for the main plotline of the series...

The feature is interesting about how the toy line was started but overall a wasted opportunity by Shout! Factory. Since this is a DVD set for an animated show...where the hell is any artwork or behind the scenes look at the show itself? Designs, storyboards, paintings, discussions with series directors or other artists or writers. None of those talents or any art from the series would be hard to track down. So why the miss?

The other "bonus" content on the disk, are very odd inclusions. The PSA actually should not be a bonus at all. These 15 second PSAs were tacked onto the end of most originals episodes. Just like for the GI JOE animated series, there were several of these vinyets created. So why not include all the PSAs and add them to the end of the episodes themselves?

Lastly there are three laughable commercials. In the first two, the quality is very poor and looks like they were pulled off some bootleg VHS tape. Ontop of this, all the faces of the child actors in the spots are completely blurred out! Looks like Hasbro didn't feel like paying these kids, now adults, again per the Screen Actors Guild agreement. You can always find the original, non-blurred content on YouTube. And more of a selection of spots.

And the last of the three spots is for the Generation 2 line! A version of the TF toy line that was introduced around the early 1990s...long after the animated series on this set ended. A really sloppy, and just plain stupid inclusion.

C'mon, I knew this and I'm not even a collector.

If Shout! Factory wants to be a bigger player in the DVD production, they will need to at least put some thought and effort into what they are doing. There is a giant Transformers multi-season box set being released in July. Maybe that's what they are saving the real behind the scenes work for.
